What makes people leave a place? Florian Dedia and Yousif Al-Chalabi asked themselves this question when they developed the idea for their documentary series “Lost Places – Secret Worlds”. Monuments, hospitals, military bases – all the locations in the series have one thing in common: they were abandoned from one day to the next. Almost as if time had stood still – if it wasn’t for the dereliction.
That is what the parts are about:
American Dream: The first film in the series “Lost Places” is about the remains of the “American Dream”: three monuments that symbolize the light and dark sides of the American Dream. The focus is on a high-tech protective shield against nuclear missiles, a showcase facility for people with disabilities and a holiday paradise used by the military.
Soviet shadows: The Soviet Empire, too, left its mark on abandoned places that are waiting to be explored. The second episode of “Lost Places” focuses on three relics: a secret bunker for nuclear warheads, the nuclear power plant in Teschernobyl and a Soviet military hospital in Beelitz.
Lost Empire: The third episode of “Lost Places” highlights three remnants of the impressive British Empire and its history. The focus is on the former best hospital in the world, the Royal Hospital Haslar, the island of Montserrat, also known as Pompeii of the Caribbean, and the first British colony on the island of Merasheen.
Bloody legacy: Anyone interested in the rise and fall of the Yugoslavian Empire will watch the last film in the documentary series spellbound. This is about the consequences of the fratricidal war, which has a military airfield, a holiday resort and an entire city on its conscience.
The four-part series can be seen from Saturday, August 15 at 10:00 a.m. at the ZDF Mediathek.

Was bewegt Menschen dazu, einen Ort zu verlassen? Diese Frage stellten sich Florian Dedia und Yousif Al-Chalabi, als sie die Idee für ihre Dokureihe “Lost Places – Geheime Welten” entwickelten. Monumente, Krankenhäuser, Militärstützpunkte – alle Schauplätze der Reihe haben eines gemeinsam: Sie wurden von einem Tag auf den anderen verlassen. American Dream: Der erste Film in der Reihe “Lost Places” dreht sich um die Überreste des “American Dream”: Drei Monumente, die die Licht- und Schattenseiten des amerikanischen Traums symbolisieren. Im Mittelpunkt stehen ein Hightech-Schutzschild gegen Atomraketen, eine Vorzeigeeinrichtung für Menschen mit Behinderungen und ein vom Militär genutztes Ferienparadies.
Sowjetische Schatten: Auch das sowjetische Reich hinterließ seine Spuren an verlassenen Orten, die erkundet werden wollen. Drei Relikte stellt die zweite Folge von “Lost Places” in den Vordergrund: Einen geheimen Bunker für Atomsprengköpfe, das Kernkraftwerk in Teschernobyl und ein sowjetisches Militärkrankenhaus in Beelitz.
Verlorenes Empire: Die dritte Episode von “Lost Places” beleuchtet drei Überbleibsel des beeindruckenden Britischen Empire und seiner Geschichte. Im Mittelpunkt stehen das ehemals beste Krankenhaus der Welt, das Royal Hospital Haslar, die Insel Montserrat, auch bekannt als Pompeji der Karibik, und die erste britische Kolonie auf der Insel Merasheen.
Blutiges Erbe: Wer sich für den Aufstieg und Fall des jugoslawischen Reiches interessiert, wird den letzten Film der Dokumentarfilmreihe gebannt verfolgen. Hier geht es um die Folgen des Bruderkrieges, der einen Militärflugplatz, einen Ferienort und eine ganze Stadt auf dem Gewissen hat.
